Project Rainbow Utah Assembles More Than 200 Flags Ahead of Trans Awareness Week Campaign
SALT LAKE CITY – Volunteers with Project Rainbow assembled more than 200 flags in preparation for their campaign for Trans Awareness Week and Trans Day of Remembrance, set for November 13-20.
A handful of volunteers and board members with Project Rainbow Utah assessed and repaired damaged flags and assembled new ones Saturday morning in downtown Salt Lake City.
“Sign up! You can get a flag staked in your yard, and we’ll come pick it up as well,” said Carina Linares, Operations Coordinator for Project Rainbow Utah. “Especially at such an important time for the election coming up: We really want to show our support for the LGBTQ+ community and our trans community.”
Linares said residents in Salt Lake, Weber, Davis, Cache, and Utah counties can sign up to have a flag staked in their yard ahead of Trans Awareness Week, which is November 13-19. Trans Day of Remembrance closes out the week on November 20. Residents who prefer an indoor flag or who are outside the distribution area can receive a flag by mail. Sign-ups close Nov. 3 and are available here.
So far more than 1,000 people have signed up for the campaign, about 100 more than in 2023 and more than double the totals from 2021 and 2022 combined.
Francisco Meza, Vice Chair for Project Rainbow Utah’s Board of Directors, said the campaign's proceeds go to Project Rainbow Utah’s Community Fund, which supports a wide variety of causes serving the LGBTQ+ community.
“We definitely want to support other organizations out there that are doing amazing work,” Meza said.
Between 10 and 20 percent of Project Rainbow flags are lost each year, mainly to theft or vandalism. That number climbed to 30 percent during the 2023 Pride campaign. You can donate to offset the costs of lost flags here.
