Project Rainbow Sets Record for Trans Day of Visibility as Utah Lawmakers Move to Ban Pride Flags in Schools, Government Buildings
SALT LAKE CITY – As Utah lawmakers move to restrict pride flags in schools and government buildings, Project Rainbow Utah announced that more Utahns than ever have signed up to fly a trans pride flag for Trans Day of Visibility on March 31.
In the same week the Utah legislature passed HB 77, which would ban pride flags in schools and government buildings, Project Rainbow reached 1,522 sign-ups for its TDoV campaign, beating its previous record of 1,512 flags in 2023.
“This is harmful legislation that brands LGBTQ+ people and our celebrations as dangerous or inherently political: Being authentically yourself should not automatically become a political statement,” said Jacey Thornton, Executive Director for Project Rainbow Utah. “This record signals that more Utahns are willing to take action and show their neighbors they support safety and equal opportunity for everyone.”
Thornton joins other advocacy groups who are pointing out that HB 77 is likely unconstitutional, and she said Project Rainbow will continue placing flags where they can and raising funds for LGBTQ+ Utahns, regardless of how the legal disputes unfold.
Project Rainbow provides flags for various displays at schools and events in public spaces, such as Pride festivals and parades. HB 77 could have a direct impact on those operations. Thornton said this makes it more important for homeowners and businesses to sign up for a flag and support the trans community on Trans Day of Visibility.
Beyond the show of support, she said the money raised from flag campaigns supports their Community Fund, which sponsors various events, workshops, and programs across Utah.
“We all need community, and our grant fund is one way to support and create spaces where LGBTQ+ people can feel not just safe, but empowered to be their best selves,” Thornton said.
Sign-ups for Trans Day of Visibility remain open until March 15. Click here for more details or to sign up to receive a flag.
